Question: Inaccuracies in Memoirs of a Geisha!?
For a research paper, I realized last minute that finding notable inaccuracies in the movie Memoirs of a Geisha is actually getting quite difficult! It was hard enough narrowing down my thesis, but now that I have a brighter outlook, I'm running out of time to find examples!.
My thesis is leaning more towards filmmakers Americanizing movies to make it more relatable to an American audience, but by doing so, they're insulting the culture!.
Why do we feed the need to have a movie dumbed down for us!?
Is it not possible for us to absorb a different culture!?

I don't know that I can help you with plot inaccuracies, but I do have some real problems with casting inaccuracies with Memoirs of a Geisha!. The 3 main female roles went to Chinese women!. The American movie company felt they had to cast actors who had more recognition to US viewers rather than going with more unknown Japanese actresses!. In essence, the film company did not feel most US viewers could tell the difference between Chinese and Japanese actresses, and as an Asian American, I was very offended!. Although I personally like those actresses in other movies, I thought they were completely wrong choices for this particular movie!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

In Memoirs, the mizuage is depicted as a deflowering ceremony, in which the geisha had physical relations with a client for the first time!. However, this type of coming-of-age was practiced by the courtesans called oiran!. A geisha's coming-of-age involved changing from apprenticeship to adulthood, outwardly signified by a change in hairstyle and clothing!. Mineko Iwasaki, the source of the story background material later claimed that reference to mizuage referred to her revenue stream and was misinterpreted by Golden!.
If you can find a copy and can get away with splicing it into your report look up the movie "Pretty Baby" with Brooke Shields where you will find this same scene translated a little differently and yet the same!. Basically, that concept is American!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
