What special effects!? There wasn't much of that in the movie other than maybe the war scenes!. I don't think people watch it for "redemption of stupidity," how ridiculous!. I would say it's just a story about overcoming the odds and making people look deeper than outside appearances!.

I like the comment about the coffee table book, that is almost a fair statement; but it missed it the mark!. It is more of a coffee table book of history from the late 1940's- the early 1990's!. Sure, there were some incredible special effects used; but it did not hit you over the head!.
Is it over rated!? Not really!. It did win a bucket load of awards and grossed over a billion dollars, but that was due to how good the movie was!.
Unfortunately, it also was a huge target!. Everybody from SNL to morning DJs to your local high school's class clown made fun of the movie by immitating Gump's speech pattern!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I would say its a bit overrated!. Pulp Ficition is my all time favorite of mine!. I thought one award that should have definitely gone to Pulp Fiction was "best actor in a supporting role" to Samuel L!. Jackson!. Another favorite is "The Shawshank Redemption"!. Some of those awards in that landslide should have gone to these two amazing films!.
