All the information that I read comes down to JJ Abrams himself saying that the thing that fell into the ocean near the end of the film was actually a satellite that awakened the monster!. How the thing got there and why it was in the ocean for 1000's of years is anyone's speculation at this point!. It could possibly be lost or separated from its mother!. Maybe it was a species that has been around for a long time!? It could have been around for millions of years even!. Maybe its a creature that when reproducing uses water as a medium!? But I would lean towards the idea that there were at one time more of them and this one somehow got separated and just stayed at the bottom of the ocean either by choice or not!.
Maybe the proposed sequel will clear things up!? I would keep an eye out for info on the new film if you're really interested in what may have been the reason behind the first one!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

at the very end when it goes to the couple you see something fall into the ocean behind them!. The logical backstory would be that the creature(s) fell or came from space and grew from there to take over and consume the earth as its next planet on its journey!.!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
Actually, I just asked a question that could pertain to this!. Basically, it involves merging The Mist and Cloverfield into one big movie!. The creatures from the Mist look similar to the Cloverfield monster as if they could have come from the same place!. The monster could have come from the Mist into our world!. If you watch both movies back to back you will see how it plays out!. You have to watch The Mist first and then Cloverfield!.
