What's the legality of showing copyrighted movies in waiting areas like hosp!

Question: What's the legality of showing copyrighted movies in waiting areas like hospitals, dentist and doctors office!?
We recently received a complaint from an anonymous source stating we were violating movie copyright laws by showing different children's movies in our waiting area!. Since the complaint, we've had to cease showing them until the corporate level finishes with their research which includes identifying the statutes that govern movie showing in public places!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Sorry to say You may find you violated copyright laws!.

The place's you listed in your question are considered Public therefore showing the movie makes it a public viewing without prior written consent from the copyright owner!.

It has become more of a witch hunt these days thanks to the lawyers who want to show a profit rather then common sense!. They see only the letter of the law not the spirit!.

I know someone who was sued for making backup copies of the DVDs they purchased, lucky for them the judge looked at the letter, but went with the spirit of the law!. By the way they were reported to the movie industry by a neighbor this is what I mean by Witch Hunt!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The FBI warning at the beginning of a video says, “Federal law provides severe civil and criminal penalties for unauthorized reproduction, distribution or exhibition of copyrighted motion pictures!.” This text appears on movies released for home use and is based in copyright law!. In essence, the FBI warning is saying that you can't show the video outside your home!. Showing it in a place of business IS exhibition and you cannot do so without the express permission of the distributor of the film!. In a store that sells TV or video equipment you will notice that these days they are usually NOT showing current movies - they have these custom produced reels that loop and any movie clips are totally cleared with the distributor!. Just playing something airing on TV is fine as long as you don't have the closed-captioning on - the CAPTIONS are the property of the captioning company and you need permission to publicly exhibit them!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Hi there :)

I"m not a lawyer but i am confident in what i'm saying!. there are 2 points i can see; 1!. If the movie is being shown on tv---then i can't imagine it being a legal issue!.
2!. Now if this is a regular movie dvd---as long as your not making any profits---no legal system in the world would waste time prosecuting your hospital!. People don't likely visit your hospital to watch free movies!
oh 3rd point!. The person who filed the complaint seriously needs a life! :)Www@Enter-QA@Com

TV stores do it all the time!. If you have bought the DVD or video, then you own that video and you can show it whenever you want!. The hospital owns the DVD and so they are allowed to show it in their waiting area!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

just ridiculous!. i wish we could make the lawyers and corporate jerks explain it to the kids!.

i thought as long as you did not charge admission it was ok!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

if it is on cable or directv, i don't think hospital waiting rooms or dentist's offices are doing anything illegal!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
