Question: "The Usual Suspects" - Question about Kobayashi!?
Okay!.!.!. I'm clueless!.!.!. please help me understand this:
If Verbal's story was unreliable and the items in the room help him generate his story, how did Kobayashi's name come up when they are talking about Marquez' extradition & Edie Finneran!? I thought the name Kobayashi came up because of the coffee cup!. If Kobayashi doesn't exist, why is his name is Marquez' file!? Here's the scene I'm referring to:
Marquez' body just washed up and Rabin, Kujan and Baer are outside of Rabin's office!.
Rabin: "They were setting up (Marquez') extradition when he escaped again!. Get this - Edie Finneran was called in to advise on the proceedings!."
Kujan: "Kobayashi!?"

I really like your question and I hope someone decides to answer it because you really got me thinking about the movie as well!.
Normally I would sit down and watch the movie again until I have it all figured out for you - but I'm not at home so the best I can do is speculate!.
The one thing I do know about the film is even the flashbacks, these are shown, made up, or elaborated upon from Verbal's pov!. So you have to be careful about the blurred and slurred lines here with fact and fiction!.
If Verbal is recalling something about Kobayashi, it's half true, we don't really know what Kobayashi's real name is, but he is basing it on his friend!. ('member the last scene in the flick when he's picked up by Kobayashi in the car)
We know Verbal made the name up - the coffee cup had that name and he set up everyone in the movie, including the police and the other robbery team members, so we don't really know what's true if anything when we have finished watching the movie!.
