In the original comic, Rhodes is a Marine, who escapes from the Viet Cong with Tony Stark, who has just put together his first powered armor!. Rhodes goes on to become Stark's personal pilot after the war, and eventually does become Iron Man for a time, while Stark bottoms out due to his alcoholism and the loss of his company to Obadiah Stane!. Stark recovers, but finds that the suit's computer interface irreversibly damages his nervous system!. Rhodes and Stark develop the War Machine suit while Stark is incapacitated and trying to find a way to cure himself!.
