Blue Lagoon Help?!

After days of being adrift, Richard and Emmeline wake in the boat to find Paddy eating the berries he picked, a poisonous berry they called the "dead'n'berries"!. Emmeline tries to get him to spit them out, but he has swallowed them!. Hopelessly lost, Richard and Emmeline decide to eat the berries as well, lying down embracing to await death!. Only a few hours later, Arthur's ship finds them floating in the boat!. Arthur asks, "Are they dead!?" and the ship's captain answers, "No, sir!. They are asleep!." The ending, true to the book, differs considerably from the one in the 1949 film version!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

My interpretation of this ending has always been this - they were always told not to eat the berries because they were poisonous and you would go to sleep and never wake up!. Once they realized their little boy had eaten these berries and would go to "sleep" and never wake up, they decided to eat them too!. I've always felt they ate the berries so they would also go to "sleep" and never wake up!. They were committing suicide!. Even though when they were found the guy said "they are asleep", I feel they were all in a comatose state from the poisonous berries and they would have all indeed died!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

That was meant to leave you guessing and not knowing for sure!.!.!. don't you just hate that!? But my first impression when I saw it for the first time many, many years ago was that they were dead!. If not, why leave the ending that way!? Why not with a smile from Brooke!?
