It's a dark atmoshpheric film about a governess who goes to a country house to take care of two children, wards of a bachelor uncle who wants as little to do with them as possible!. After arriving,she begins to sense(or thinks she senses)an evil presence that she's sure means to harm the children!. One of the spirits, a mean sadistic man when alive appears to her in such a way that she doubts her own sanity for a time!. So does the ghost of the governess she's taken over for!.
