It's mainly to show that they enjoyed the movie alot and want a way to show it!.
It also happens because a few people start clapping and the others just join in!.
And some of it's just because it's habitual to clap after something preformed!.

clapping is a sign of appreciation to the people that worked their butts off making the movie so audiences all around the world can enjoy it!. people usually only clap when the movie was really good basically saying thank you for making such a great movie!.

I think it's because of the way the movie made them feel!. If the movie made them feel really good, then they're pretty elated after and it's a good way for the general crowd to give their thumbs up to the movie! Personally, I like when they do that!.!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
