Question: Chris McCandless (protagonist of "Into the Wild"): wise or overly idealistic!?
The book and the movie portray Chris fairly differently, although the end moral is the same!. If you've read the book and seen the movie, did his portrayal in one make you think differently about his portrayal in the other!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

That's a good question!. I think the movie portrayal makes you feel much more sympathetic to him!. When reading the book, you keep thinking how young and foolish he was!. He took his idealism way too far, obviously!. What helped make him more likeable in the film was that he obviously had an epiphany towards the end, when he realized that a life without love and human connection was not worth living!. I found that very moving!. With the book, he came across as quite selfish, leaving a lot of very hurt people who cared about him in his wake!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
I thought the movie portrayed him as mainly good, idealistic, smart and gutsy!. The book portrayed both sides because the author interviewed many people some who thought he was a cocky kid who made some naive choices!. I really admire the story, I'm glad they told it and it wasn't sugarcoated!. I sometimes agree with the basic idea - forget society, forget money and let's just live simpler and do what matters but I do think he was being naive thinking that he could take on the Alaskan wilderness by himself with no training except some books and interviews with a few people!. In the book, he actually refuses some necessary items!. also, if he had ventured out he would've found a ranger's station and a better place to cross the creek, etc!. But I do like how the movie gave him some closure (fictional or not) it seemed as though he realized that the important part of his life wasn't Alaska but it was the people he met getting there!.
