It's based on the experiences of women in the 40's, 50's, and early 60's!. I don't think there was actually a Vera Drake, so it's not strictly true!.
i remember when I was a 14 year old, back in1961!. A neighbour, her husband had left her with 2 young children, died of an illegal abortion!. The other neighbours stood in their hundreds to gawp!. I was there too but my mother called me in to the house!. "Let them bury her in peace" she said to me!.
