It's been a while since I saw October Sky, but, I love every time I catch it on the movie channels!.

As a mother, Homer's mother's strengths were her desire to help her sons break out of Coalwood and the support that she provides them both with the older's athletic success and Homer's scientific endeavors!. The only weakness I saw was how she couldn't support her family after the father's accident (this being not her fault)!. As a wife, she was supportive but yet resentful of her husband's career in the mines!.
7!. The film showed that sometimes individuals have to do what is in the best interest of their family before thinking of themselves!. Homer knew that his family and community expected him to give up high school in order to help maintain his brother's scholarship!.
8!. The community was key in Homer's effort to break out!. They showed their support by coming to the rocket launchings and encouraging his interest in science and aeronautics!. also, he had the endorsement of his teacher and his friends!.
9!. The mother sought a way out of Coalwood by raising two sons that wanted to leave, too!. Homer's brother dealt with his desire to leave by excelling in football and getting a scholarship!. Hence, this allowed him a way out!. And, Homer had the science fair and his rockets to get him out of Coalwood!.
