Edward Norton is next in line of A-list celebrities at the helm of a major superhero movie!. Following in the footsteps of Christian Bale, Will Smith and more recently, Robert Downey Jr!., Norton doesn’t initially seem like the right actor for such populist fare, let alone one that is as preposterous as the misadventures of a galloping green goliath!. His boyish appearance and substantial acting chops, however, keep The Incredible Hulk from careening into total nonsense!. Much like the recent Iron Man, Marvel Studios, working with director Louis Leterrier (of The Transporter films), walk the line between cartoonish, absurdist action and melodrama rooted in realism!. Despite worries that these films will inevitably feel and look like the same movie, Marvel is sticking with the formula!.

Unlike Ang Lee’s previous attempt at the franchise (2003’s Hulk), which was plodding and solemn, Leterrier and his screenwriters keep the film constantly moving, alternating between exposition and action so quickly that sometimes the film un-spools at maddening speeds, with scene blurring into one another!. I would have to remind myself that I was watching The Incredible Hulk and not Iron Man!. For example, what took Ang Lee significant time to tell – that being the story of Bruce Banner’s transformation into the Hulk – Leterrier efficiently dispenses with in the opening credit sequence!. The filmmakers quite rightly assumed everyone already knew the Hulk’s origin story and didn’t feel compelled to rehash it!. Instead, we are dropped into the story as it is already taking place, mimicking a narrative device employed in a lot of television serials!. The story starts with Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) hiding out from the U!.S!. military in the flavellas of Rio de Janeiro!. His days include shift work at a bottling plant and yoga meditation as a means of controlling his anger; of course, his real job is to find a cure to his outsized alter ego!. When a contact, known only as Mr!. Blue, suggests he may have found a way of curb the effects of gamma radiation, Banner is once again on the move, traveling to the U!.S!. to meet his former love, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler), the daughter of Gen!. Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross (William Hurt), the man who created the Hulk in the hopes of harnessing his powers for military use!.

The film doesn’t offer much in the way of plot after this initial setup!. Tim Roth’s character, as a Russian-British soldier hell-bent on destroying the Hulk, doesn’t get much to do, which is too bad since Roth appears to relish playing a bad guy!. While not as good as his turn in Tim Burton’s remake of Planet of the Apes, Roth is fun to watch!. It’s too bad then, that there isn’t a way of making a Hulk movie with just Norton and Roth, and not their CGI created offspring!. I guess that would be a different movie (Woody Allen’s Everyone Says I Love You to be exact, which they were both in)!. While the special effects aren’t all that spectacular, they are good!. This time around, the Hulk is an impressive CGI creature and a far cry from the weightless, amorphous shape that was his previous incarnation!. The epic final battle in the streets of Harlem between the Hulk and Abomination, Tim Roth’s alter ego, is impressive at portraying mayhem while finely revealing character motivation!. The Hulk’s rage is clear as he pummels Abomination’s face with his fists, yet there is no apparent joy or catharsis involved in the act, unlike the pleasure Abomination experiences from all the carnage!. While The Incredible Hulk is not without considerable flaws (i!.e!. Liv Tyler’s disposable character or Tim Blake Nelson’s scenery chewing), it works as straightforward popcorn entertainment, with no misgivings as to what it is!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
