Answers:
The Wizard of Oz was a much, much better film hands down!. I think it was more forward for the era which was why the oscar went to Gone With The Wind!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I've always called Gone With the Wind the most overrated movie of all time!. It's excessively long, terribly boring, and EVERY single character is completely detestable!.

That said, it deserved the best picture Oscar for pretty much the same reasons Titanic did!. It was a national phenomenon!. Everyone from little kids to senior citizens were seeing it multiple times!. It made so much money that it changed the way Hollywood works!.

The Wizard of Oz, by contrast, was a complete flop in its own time!. It didn't even turn a profit until it was re-released ten years after the 1939 Best Picture Oscar was handed out!. It has come to be recognized for the achievement that it is, but there was no way, in 1939, it should have won the Oscar against Gone With the Wind!.

Personally, I'd say Mr!. Smith Goes to Washington was the best movie of 1939 anyway!. Even so, it couldn't compete with the cultural impact of Gone With the Wind!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

No, I don't think "Wizard of Oz" should have won the oscar instead of "Gone with the Wind!." The general public loved "Gone with the Wind" which had generated much interest even before it was completely cast, let alone released!. On the other hand, ticket sales to "Wizard of Oz" were rather sluggish, and that film had very few people who would have championed it when it was released; "Wizard of Oz" might have been a financial disaster, had it not been extremely popular in England, where it did great business because people would see it again and again; unfortunately, England was the only place the movie turned out to have a receptive audience!. "The Wizard of Oz" did not achieve great levels of popularity in America until one of the networks begans to make an event out of showing it once each year!. Television made "The Wizard of Oz" popular, and because it became popular, many people assumed incorrectly that it had been popular since its first release!.

There was no way the voting members of the academy would have selected a movie that didn't find favor with the general audiences of the day, a factor that "Gone with the Wind" had in spades!. The Academy Awards really exist to increase ticket sales, not honor the more deserving movies!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Yes! Wizard of Oz should have gotten it!.

But then I would probably be judging the two according to my complete and total distaste for Vivien Leigh in Gone With the Wind - or for female characters played obnoxiously whiney in any movie - more than anything!.

Wizard didn't really have that, so, thumbs up BIG TIME!Www@Enter-QA@Com

Gone With the Wind!.
It tackled much more difficult and sensitive topics!.
The Wizard of Oz, though thoroughly entertaining, is a children's movie!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

i don't know about you, but the flying monkeys scared the crap out of me, maybe the oscar voters thought the same thing!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Gone With The Wind deserved it a lot more than Wizard Of Oz - the better film won the OscarWww@Enter-QA@Com
