One reason why remakes of old movie chillers are so poor is that the originals were made in times of fairly strict censorship, which forced the film-makers to be much more subtle and imaginative - scaring the audience with suggestions of mysterious and terrible things that were never shown on screen!. The terrors of films like Tourneur's Cat People were in the mind, not the eye!. Now that there's virtually nothing you can't show in a film, horror films naturally take the line of least resistance, and appeal to the lowest-common-denominator audience with shock effects, sadism and explicit sex!. As Alfred Hitchcock said, "anyone can show you a bucket of guts", and, all too often, that's just what they do!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Hollywood remakes are never as good as the French originals eg The Assassin (was it not!?) was a shot by shot remake of the French film Nikita (or La femme Nikita)!. The French original contained magic, the Hollywood copy was just another action movie!.

The French have a presence that we Anglos take seriously and that we can not copy!. Another eg is the French film D'artagne's Daughter (unsure spelling) It's a straight foreward, Three Musketeers story, but the French take it to another level!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
