DiCaprio's character did NOT die at the end of the film!.
He and almost all the inhabitants of the island community left and DiCaprio was shown in an internet cafe in the last scene where he checked his email and opened one from the French girl who sent him the group shot of all the people from the island community!.

I'm a HUGE Leo fan, and I mean HUGE!. I want to see the Beach though I heard it sucks on several occasions!. I'd still liked to see it and I'm pretty sure he doesn't die though, I saw this question (well, to this extent) not to long ago, I'm pretty sure this is one of he's few movies he does not die in!. I'll be back if I'm wrong, if I don't come back and tell you other wise, he lives in it!.
