As noted, it was to throw the Joker off and to protect his family!. As a comic fan, it bothered me because he's still in the books!.!.!.I was ok thinking "nah, he's ok"!.!.!.until they told his wife!.!.!.then it became believable for me and I was mad!.!.!.his return actually took me by surprise, which doesn't happen often anymore!.

And it's Jim Gordon!.!.!.:-)

the joker thought he was dead which confused him and that made gordon be able to save harvey dent!.
it also added a lot of a drama to the movie, i know that when he "died" i was more sad then when the girl actually did die, and i could not have been happier when i saw he came back!. it added a lot to the movie even though it was a little confusingWww@Enter-QA@Com

The Joker thought he was dead so Gordon was able to serve the community!. Plus, it lifted the threat off of Gordon's family!. They were threatening his wife & kids so he pretended to be dead!.!.!.then there would be no need to hurt them!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It said right in the movie he did it to protect his family!. He also did it so that Joker would have his kill for the day, without anyone dying!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

so the joker thought he was deadWww@Enter-QA@Com
