I read the book and it explained that over the centuries, people had adapted to diseases and viruses and anything microscopic that attacks the human body here on earth!. That we've built up our immune systems over the years!. When the aliens came to earth and started destroying everything and everybody, they had the guns and lasers but lacked one thing -- an immune system!. So when they started settling here on the planet, all the microscopic germs that we are used to living with ended up killing them!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
They basically died off from our own bacteria as they were not immune to it, in the original story (the book version) they started to die off when they started to feed on human blood which contained all the bacteria the idea is to create a sence of irony that after all of our best technology failed to defeat them our own immune system kills them off
It wasn't really explained in the remake mainly because the whole film was done from the perspective of a normal family trying to survive the invasion which realistically wouldn't know what was going on making it more of a disaster movie (though it could have still been easy explained) the original version did explain it better but the remake did have a few more things that the book had and the origilal movie didn't, like the Red Weed which was their food source made up of human blood and remains and they used tripod mechaniods while the 1950's movie used more flying saucer like machines!.

This film was a very poor re-make of the original!.
In the original they tell you that it was earthbound viruses that killed them off!.
