Question: How much does it take to make (film) a movie, such as "The Dark Knight" and that like "Step Brothers"
i want to know how much film makers spend to make a movie!. something big like "The Dark Knight" and something not as big like "Step Brothers"!. also how long does it take to make the movies!. im just curious about it!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

The Dark Knight budget was around $180 million to $185 million, where as the budget for Step Brothers was $52 million, which is fairly expensive for a comedy like it!. Lots of it is spent on paying the cast and crew, though!.
These budgets don't include the money they spent on the marketing campaigns, however!. (Jerry Seinfeld's Bee Movie spent $150 million on advertising and promoting the movie)
Spider-Man 3 cost $258 million to make, which is the record!.
But, adjusted for inflation, War and Peace cost over $500 million!.
I think that Dark Knight spent their budget really well, by not incorporating too many special effects!.
As for time, a big studio film like the Dark Knight could take almost a year or more if they have to film in multiple locations with a lot of stunts and make-up and costumes and a bigger crew!. It could also take up to a year to build the sets and set up all of the equipment!.
Step Brothers, I'm guessing, only took about 4 months at the most to film, seeing as Will Ferrell stars in 2 movies a year usually (2007-Blades of Glory and lots of TV stuff, 2006-Stranger Than Fiction and Talladega Nights, and he already starred in Semi-Pro earlier this year), and most of them are with the same producer!. John C!. Reilly also already did Walk Hard not too long ago!.
Those 4 months are not all used for filming, though!. Some movies only take 20 days to shoot!. Million Dollar Baby only took 37 days to film, and it won Best Picture!. If there are minimal stunts and not much make-up to do, films can be very quick to make!.
However, I think that the best use of a budget and time by far was Pirates of the Caribbean 3 which cost less than $150 million to make!. It had many big stars in it, and had nearly 3 hours of CGI in every shot, not to mention the insanely short period of 6 months they had to work on it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

There are a huge number of variables to consider and you have to look at what costs are considered part of the production budget!.
To actually make the movie, you have to hire a director, actors, the various crew, pay for any location permits, costs for sets, the cost of rights for the material, costs for special effects!. Then you have post production costs like editing, sound mixing, etc!.
The bulk of most productions costs go to salaries, specifically the top actors, and digital effects!.
To release the movie you have a whole other set of costs associated with the promotional campaign!. TV spots, trailers for theatres, posters, billboards, print ads, etc!.
And there are other costs such as production of 35mm prints!. I've never been able to find out exactly what the prints cost, but something in the ball park of $1500 each seems to be something of a consensus!. Take a major release like The Dark Knight and you're looking at $1500 x 10,000 prints and that can be another $15 million on top of what was paid to make and advertise the movie!.
