Why do you think so many American SF movies...?!

Question: Why do you think so many American SF movies!.!.!.!?
depict the destruction of the US, of the city of New York in particular!? I haven't seen such descriptions in non-American movies!.!.!. (in French / Italian, Dutch etc!. movies) and it really makes me wonder whether it's not something related to the idea of progress!. US progressed so fast in such a short period of time that somehow it's easier for Americans to "burn" stages and imagine the end of that progress!? What else do you think it can be!?

inspired by a conversation I had with an American friend while watching a movie like that!.!.!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

More of the American films are made with big budgets from large movie studios!. European films tend to be made on smaller budgets and the director needs to keep to that budget (because there's no major studio that will advertise more heavily if he goes over budget)!. Most of the larger special effects companies are also located in the U!.S!. because there's more of a demand for it in American films!. Personally I'd rather see a better plot than overuse of such effects!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

Perhaps Americans are into sensationalism and Big Bertha from the Planet Boobie eats New York more than, say, European countries because there is more singular culture in Europe as a whole!. The Asian countries are also into Sci Fi, Godzilla-type movies as well!. However, it's true that I have never heard of a movie about 2 Headed Dragons spitting fire over Moscow, for instance!.!.!.I guess in a way, Americans and Asians eat the most nightmare induced bizarre foods before retiring to bed!. I'm not trying to make "light" your question here, it's actually quite a good question, but, I guess I just don't really know if there is one particular reason for the phenomenon you have mentioned!. There are probably a multitude of reason all leading to the same conclusion!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Does SF stand for Sci-Fi!? I think it's because the point is to create a hero who prevails against the unknown force that is about to destroy us!. Whether it be Sci-Fi, romance, action, adventure, comedy, fantasy, or for children, in just about every movie I have ever watched, there has always been some type of conflict for the main character to prevail over!. And you know, I've always wished they could just make a movie where things go smoothly, but I guess that's life!. Life is not perfect, and there is always conflict and obstacles!. The heroes teach us that these obstacles can be overcome!.

What is Sci-Fi like for the French / Italian, Dutch etc!. movies!?Www@Enter-QA@Com

The movie makers just wanted a chance to use their cool little special effects computers, and needed a script that would let them blow stuff like that up!.

You do still see the destruction of cities in some better sci-fi!. Godzilla tears up Tokyo to protest the pollution of the environment!. Though Independence Day relied heavily on modern effects, it had a point in its destruction--they wanted to show landmarks from cities around the world destroyed in a matter of minutes, so that you'd know that the whole world had changed overnight!.

Some sci-fi seeks to be a warning against letting technology getting away from humanity--that we need to be sure that we actually should develop new technology, and not just make it because we think we can!. You see that idea in many movies--I Robot, Terminator, Jurassic Park, War Games--too many to name them all!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

Poor old New York that icon of the capitalist and the city that spawns so many dreams that lay shattered among the tawdry and shallow life!. Yes, New York must be destroyed in the hope of a brighter, newer city of glorious light shall spring forth anew!.

In SF parlance New York represents the bastion of American strength and stalwartness!. If it can be destroyed or damaged then the force capable must be strong and powerful!. Thus in its defeat, 'tis the greater glory!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

its because there is so many recognizable things in New York, everyone knows the statue of liberty, ect, and much of them are sort of national monuments, so its impactful to the audience, no mater where they live!. if they showed the destruction of say, some small town in iowa, it'd be less emotionally triggering than showing a beloved national monument get trashed by a giant lizard, or aliens from space!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
