They are not in the future, the rest of the story is set in the past!. The musical version of WotW, like the H!.G!. Wells original book is set in victorian england when the book was written, which is why it talks about steam ships and horses, whilst the ending added onto the musical is set in the 70's when it was released!.
My interpretation is that after telling the story of the book, the narrative has flipped back to the "real world" and is just trying to scare you into thinking aliens are really out there, as i doubt even in 100 or so years people would have forgotton that martians had taken over the world!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Perhaps they had been in space for a while and didn't know what had happened on earth!. Good question though!.

Saw WOTW live last year, it is amazing :-DWww@Enter-QA@Com

Think they are surprised because they think the Martians are all dead!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

i thought they began to die when the birds started to eat themWww@Enter-QA@Com

I have the record also, what you have to consider is the time when it was written, when space travel was complete science fiction, here is an exert fro Wiki

"The War of the Worlds (1898), by H!. G!. Wells, is an early science fiction novel which describes an invasion of England by aliens from Mars!. It is one of the earliest and best-known depictions of an alien invasion of Earth, and has influenced many others, as well as spawning several films, radio dramas, comic book adaptations, and a television series based on the story!. The 1938 radio broadcast caused public outcry against the episode, as many listeners believed that an actual Martian invasion was in progress, a notable example of mass hysteria!."

So it was even beyond H!.G's imagination and knowledge to understand the cocept of aliens from Mars, or any other planet!.
