Machines have enslaved humanity, either our own or some ET's, its not defined!. In the war the sky was "burned" and so they cannot get solar power, which is where all power on the earth comes from eventually!. So, the machines start using humans as power sources, we make electricty and heat!.
First they put humans in pods but then they needed to keep their minds satisfied so they would be obedient so they created a utopian socitey inside a giant computer where all humans would "jack in" as avatars!. Thing is the humans had no idea they were"jacked in" as it was from birth and so the real world around the humans is actually a giant computer simulation!.
Thing is humans are weird and utopias don't work so they created a free world that we all know as reality, everything is simulated while our bides lie it pods, making electricty!.
When charcters do impossible things in the world it is because they are self aware and "realize" its a computer program and they can violate all the laws of reality, they just have to stop believing in the "code"!.
This is where Neo can do all his tricks when he is fullly aware and can bend the simulation to his will
Meanwile there are humans in the real world working against the machines (they are in Zion) and the red pill /blue pill comes from that!. If you take one its like a bit of computer code that terminates you from the simulation and you wake up in your body in the real world!. If you take the other one you forget about the "real world" and go back to the computer one
