It wasn't a movie, it was an episode of the TV Series, "Tales from the Dark Side"!.
This closet monster devours a girl, then scene when you see the butler talking on the phone, just behind him in the distance you can see the monster coming down the staircase!. The monster comes straight toward the butler and just when you think it's going to grab him too the butler bends down out of sight then stands up holding the monster like it's a child on his arm!.
