I saw the original Korean film and loved it!. I'm not a huge fan of rom-coms, but that was a really smart one!.
Then, just last week I saw the trailer for the (straight to dvd) American one!.!.!.
I feel pretty confident, not even seeing the American version, that the Korean one is without question better!.
One of the most charming things about that movie is the social differences between Asia & America when it comes to things like Family & Dating!. So when you get rid of that social aspect because it doesn't apply or work the same in American culture, you're left with just a surface retelling!.
It was the same with the Japanese and American versions of "Shall We Dance"
In Japan, the stakes for the main character sneaking out to Ballroom Dance, are much higher!.
Nobody would blink if an American man took Dance lessons!.
Anyway, most American remakes can't really compare!.
One that worked was The Departed, based on Infernal Affairs!.!.!. however, it wasn't better, they made it their own, both films were excellent, but then again, crime is crime, there isn't a lot of social differences in that genre!.
