there have been plans for a sequel since July 1996 but for some reason they keep puting it off!.
I dont know where it stands now, but here are two ideas they had listed in articles about it over the years:
1!. Not all the aliens are dead, and not all the city destroyers are either!. There are still many on land that got there before the mother ship was destroyed and lots of fighters around!. The resistance has only one chance to still win this!. Use the alien technology back against them!. When exploring the wrecked city ships the resistance finds weapons, fighters and other stuff to fight the final stand!.
2!. The original Fleet is destroyed and Earth is trying to recover!. However a second fleet is on its way and earth learns of it!. Their only hope, search the wrecked fleet for weapons and ships to fight the second invasion!.
In about 2000 a article said that only Bill Pullman and Will Smith had signed on for the sequel!. But sometime later i think i read Bill pulled out and only Will would return out of the original cast!.
