In the movie "The Prestige" (SPOILER ALERT!), why did the real Angier !

Question: In the movie "The Prestige" (SPOILER ALERT!), why did the real Angier survive the tricks and the clones drown!?
SPOILER ALERT - This was a terrific movie, but here's my problem with the ending!. The "transporting" machine, which ended up being a duplicating machine, takes the original object and creates a duplicate some distance away, leaving the original untouched and unmoved!. We know that because of the hats, the cat, and Angier's own experiment where he has to shoot his clone!. Why then, didn't the machine take the original Angier, drop him into the water tank, and create the false "duplicate" some distance away!? Why does Angier say it was difficult not knowing if he would be the man in the tank, or the man taking the applause!? Wouldn't the machine always work the same way, and wouldn't it mean the "real" Angier would have drowned the first time he did the trick!? Thoughts!? This is really bugging me! Thanks!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Confusing I know!. The machine dulplicates him exactly!. His personality and thoughts are in the other guy!. For a minute there are two Angiers and he is afraid he will be the man in the tank!. Technically the real Angier died awhile ago!. I might have gotten it wrong but thats how I view it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I'm guessing that since a clone is exactly the same as the original, each clone thought himself to be the original!.
So no matter which survived, the clone or the original, both had the exact same memories and feelings, including the rivalry with (forgot his name) Christian Bale's character, and the whole duplicating process!.

It's kind of confusing, and I might be wrong, but it kind of makes sense this way!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think the ones in the tank ARE the 'original' Angiers!. In other words, the first Angier doing the whole show is, in the finale dumped into the tank, whilst the replica is created up in the balcony!. As every replica has exactly the same memories feelings etc, there really is no difference between the originals and the clones!. But the part with him saying he never knew which one he'd be, in the tank or taking the applause, must indicate that each clone retains the short memories of the original perhaps!?

So yes, you are right (I think!) that the "real" Angier (as in the one we see throughout the whole film) drowned the first time he did the trick!.

Hope this helps!Www@Enter-QA@Com
