Question: Do you think the movie " The Exorcist" is overrated as being "a very scary movie"!?
I couldn't believe I didn't look away or cover my eyes for one second when I watched it!. I mean I thought it was going to be a very scary movie especially when I heard people were fainting in theaters and not sleeping for days!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Answers:
YES!!! I thought my friend and I were the only ones that thought that! We turned all the lights off and we were home alone!. We thought we were going to get so scared but we didn't!. We have seen scarier movies than that!!! It was a major disappointment!Www@Enter-QA@Com

No!.!.!. I think "The Exorcist" is an absolute classic of horror, and really, really scary!.

But you do have to consider a few things!. For one, it's somewhat a matter of personal taste!.!.!. what scares me might not scare you so much, and vice-versa!.

Then there's the vintage!.!.!. like any art form, horror evolves (and devolves, too, but that's another article)!. If you look back at what frightened people in theaters in the 1930's, most of us would just laugh!.

Any proper horror film demands something from you -- what they call in literature as "suspension of disbelief"!. In other words, you KNOW it's not real, so you have to get past that and get frightened anyway!.!.!. you have to very specifically hide your disbelief from yourself!. As movie making has improved, that's become easier now, but much harder looking back!.!.!.!. older films may just seem too "fake"!.

And there's another aspect to film evolution!.!.!. every single writer and director in the horror business today has seen "The Exorcist", or they have no business being in that business!. Some are simply aware of what that meant to the art form, some take inspiration from it!.!.!. but anyone doing horror has a need to frighten people who might see a bunch of horror films in any given year!.

It's like roller coasters -- every new coaster built has to do something better/faster/higher than the previous ones, or an experienced rider such as myself might not even bother!. When I was a kid, the top coasters were barely 100ft tall!.!.!. a few years ago, the new at the semi-local park (Great Adventure) was over 400ft tall!.

In horror, they have to "up the ante" in the same way!. It doesn't always work!.!.!. simply showing digital gore doesn't get you a more frightening film (well, other that for that small part of the population that's just freaked out about blood & gore)!. But on the overall, you see enough of this, you get de-sensitized!.

also, where did you see "The Exorcist"!? There's not the same impact on a 19" TV as there would be on the 71" TV with full surround sound in my media room, which in turn doesn't have the same impact as a good theater!. Part of your ability to really get scared is to be fully immersed in the film!.!.!. impossible in a bright room, where you can hit "pause" at any time and go fetch popcorn and a cold one!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

No, not really!. You have to consider that it was made back in the early 1970's and subject matter like that had never before been attempted in a major motion picture!. also; the way in which the horror was depicted was graphically raw and authentic looking, so it was very believable to people!. Most of the horror films before that time looked cheesy by comparison!.

Another example is the film "Psycho"!. People had never seen anything like that before and it is probably difficult to fully appreciate now the impact that these films had in their day!. My mother told me that after seeing "Psycho" she was scared when taking a shower for weeks!. The internet and other factors have no doubt contributed in desensitizing us to graphic violence!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

yeah, I think you have to be catholic or at least a little bit god-fearing for that movie to be scary - but we have to remember that when the Exorcist was first released nothing quite like it had been seen before!. What rating would it get these days I wonder!? Www@Enter-QA@Com

Probably not now with all the gore and blood and guts!.!.!. but, when it first came out it was a VERY SCARY MOVIE, and people did faint and had a reaction to it!. Just goes to show how immune we have become to horror and shocks!.!.!.!.!.!. What next I ask myself !Www@Enter-QA@Com

/shrug back in the 70's when it was made, im sure it was scary at the time!. now a days, with the horror genre in full swing, people have been desensitized to alot of things!. so what may have been scary back then is not so much now!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Yeah it is pretty scary! and I totally agree with HazyDave about it being more scarier when you are the theater ,in the dark and not being able to pause the movie!.!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Yep, it bored me to tears!. I just didn't think it was scary!. Maybe it's cuz I'm an atheist, I don't know!?

Blair witch, scared the crap out of me!. Exorcist, not so much!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

i was completely unaffected by that movie!.
