Loved that sort of thing!. It's hard to describe exactly what the "type" of the movie is, but it feels to me like the core of movies like this is that a child raised in the most marshmallow-wrapped environment possible -- 1980's suburbia -- needs quickly to become the omniprepared film-noir hero!. If we agree on type, then the other movies I can think of along these lines would be:
Explorers, with River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke
Flight of the Navigator, with the voice of Pee Wee Herman
The Neverending Story
The Goonies, with everyone!.!.!.
Adventures in Babysitting, with Elizabeth Shue
The Labyrinth, with Jennifer Connely and David Bowie
Of course a whole lot of fantasy picked up on the Narnia motif of putting young children into the hero roles (this is a tradition that has continued on today with the Harry Potter novels), so there are probably a lot more fantasy books out there!. I've left out a few movies like "Blank Check" because they really don't seem to fit -- the characters have too much adult help, and they don't manage to get a significant distance from home!. If you're willing to count slightly older characters, then most of John Hughes's movies count, as do most of the other movies his favorite actors made -- e!.g!. WarGames!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
