I'm not an expert but here is what I remember:
The book is different from the movie!.
The main character(mc!?) is a newspaper writer with a real anger problem!. I believe he threatened to kill his son and got into trouble for that!. So, he's really sorry and is sure he won't do it again!. When he finds out about the place in Colorado, he thinks that he will be able to write about the history of the Stanley hotel!. He finds a bunch of information in the attic about what really happened and realizes there was quite a scandal going on!.
The movie just has him being introduced to the hotel!. His boy has esp!. and is connected with ghosts and a black man who's been taking care of the hotel!. Only he can see the woman in the bathtub who commited suicide and the two dead girls in the hallway!. They just stand there!. He finds them while he's riding his big wheel down the hallway and he rides away!.
Meanwhile Jack is sitting at his typewriter imagining that he's talking to a bartender and becoming somebody he doesn't recognize but he's really just sitting there typing the words over and over and over!. His wife comes to him hoping to bring out his happy side instead it pisses him off and he threatens to kill her!. She realizes her husband has gone crazy when she sees the paper
!. So, then he chases her and even goes after his son but the black innkeeper tries to defend him but gets killed!. They run to get on a snow mobile but it won't start because Jack cut the gasline so they wind up having to kill Jack to keep him from killing them!. They show his picture in the old photo on the wall!.!.!.as if he were born at the wrong time!.!.!.
I guess it's similar to the remake!. Those three stories are hard not to keep straight for me!. The remake was my favorite because the whole place transforms into a place in time!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
