I have mild arachnophobia, but I enjoy the 1955 movie "Tarantula" a good deal being both attracted to and repelled by it at the same time; the storyline is classic and I love the script and the acting but there are a few scenes of the title critter that I find mildly difficult to watch, but I can't say I find the film particularly frightening!.
On the other hand, there are three scenes in "The Haunting (of Hill House)" (the original version from 1964, not the CGI effects ladden version of the late ninties) that are genuinely disturbing!. One is a simple appearance of something unexpected, which turns out to be someone the others are searching for, but the other two push the barriers between imagination and psychology and thinned out a theater audience considerably; it is the only movie I have ever seen that had people leaving because they were afraid to watch more scenes!. What is really interesting is that the movie never gives you any traditional image that would evoke fear, no monsters, no psychopaths, no creatures from another world, and you never actually see what is bedeviling the characters on the screen!.
There is no movie that anyone else has listed that even comes close to holding a candle to "The Haunting" for genuinely frightening sequences!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
