From Wikipedia:
"Vertigo" (1958) again starred Stewart, this time with Kim Novak and Barbara Bel Geddes!. Stewart plays "Scottie", a former police investigator suffering from acrophobia, who develops an obsession with a woman he is shadowing (Kim Novak)!. Scottie's obsession leads to tragedy, and this time Hitchcock does not opt for a happy ending!. Though the film is widely considered a classic today, Vertigo met with negative reviews and poor box office receipts upon its release, and marked the last collaboration between Stewart and Hitchcock!.

This verifies what I have heard in interviews: People did not like their hero having a nervous breakdown and the film ending in such a bleak, downbeat way!.

From IMDb comes this anecdote:
Alfred Hitchcock was embittered at the critical and commercial failure of the film in 1958!. He blamed this on James Stewart for "looking too old" to attract audiences anymore!. Hitchcock never worked with Stewart, previously one of his favorite collaborators, again!.

This is from a review:
"Vertigo" is a dark film, despite its many lightly lit scenes!. Hitchcock is at his finest here, and delivers what has to be one of the greatest single contributions to the world of cinema that the world has ever known!. Unfortunately, Hitchcock was before his time, and the film failed at the box-office during its original release!. But since 1958, a new audience has grown to appreciate the film that audience simply couldn’t see 63 years ago!. Stewart, Novak, and Hitchcock will be remembered for what they accomplished here and deservedly so!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The first time I saw it, I didn't like the kinda 70's psychedelic images of Jimmy Stewart falling!. Do you remember what scenes I'm referring to!? The dizzy, spinning ones that were used to enhance the feeling of Stewart falling and suffering from vertigo!. Now!.!.!.I love the movie and see it every time it's shown!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Plot was considered too long and detailed but people then appreciated itWww@Enter-QA@Com

You know the same thing happened with The Wizard of Oz!. Sometimes it takes time for people to appreciate a film!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think the plot was too convoluted for some!.

I loved it from the get-goWww@Enter-QA@Com
