Why is the old psycho movie rated 'R'?!
Question: Why is the old psycho movie rated 'R'!?

Answers:
Psycho (1960) predated the MPAA rating system (instituted in 1968) by several years!. The DVD versions I've seen advertised were unrated, so I'm surprised that it would have even been submitted for a rating unless it was a theatrical release on the "art house" circuit!. Personally, I don't see it warranting an R rating!. Scary, sure, but the violence is shown almost indirectly, in Hitchcock's inimitable use of shadow and "cuts" between incomplete images that together convey the brutality of the attack without the need for direct graphic penetration of a knife in a body!. The "nudity" was simulated and the underwear scenes aren't as racy as my sunday newspaper advertising supplements!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
Back when the original Psycho was made, there was no such thing as "PG-13"!. Obviously, Psycho shouldn't have been rated "PG" because it was one of the scariest movies of that time!.
I believe the "PG-13" rating didn't exist until around 1984!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I don't know whether or not they had the current film rating system in 1960 but the reason it is today would be the violence of the shower scene!. Even though Hitchcock filmed it so that the knife never touches the body, it's still scary!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
