Why did George Lucas start with Star Wars episode IV?!

Answers:
I am stunned !.!.!. absolutely STUNNED by the completely uninformed answers that you have gotten so far!. It truly boggles the mind!. Anyways !.!.!.

Short Answer:

Episode IV is the only one of the 6 movies that could be called a "stand alone" movie!. By that I mean it had a definite beginning and a definite ending!. If the movie had flopped nobody would have to know that there was more to the story!. Episode IV is the one of the 6 that doesn't have all the "flashy FX" stuff!. There's a good reason for that !.!.!. it didn't exist at the time the movie was being made!. Lucas and company made it up as they went a long !.!.!. kind of like "How are we going to do that!!?!!?!!?" - "I don't know just do it"!. The rest is history!.

Long Answer:

The first thing that needs to be said is that the 6 movie Star Wars Saga that we have now bears little resemblance to the story that Lucas started out with although he denies it!. The second thing is that Lucas seems to change the "How it all happened" story about every 8 to 9 months!. My answer is based on his last version of how it happened!.

In the early 70s Lucas began working on a massive "Space Opera" called "The Star Wars"!. What he ended up with was a 12 part !.!.!. yes, 12 part story that was to be told in the manner of the old Flash Gordon series of the late 50's & 60's!. He saw the changes happening in the industry and realized that it wouldn't work that way so he then cut it down to a 9 part 3 trilogy story!. The first trilogy was to be about the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker; the second trilogy was to be about the rise of Luke Skywalker and the redemption of Anakin Skywalker; the third trilogy was to be about the "other Skywalker" that Yoda mentions in ep V and again in ep VI!. Lucas started showing the story to all the big movie production companies of the day and was told by all of them that the paper the story was written on wouldn't even make good toilet paper!. Disappointed but not discouraged Lucas continued to work on the script and with the success of American Graffiti he gained a little clout in Hollywood so he started around with his Star Wars story again!. Most still thought it wasn't worth making but FOX decided to roll the dice, still thinking it would be a flop, and gave Lucas the start up money that he needed to get to work on Star Wars!.

As for did he have them all written and just start in the middle !.!.!. yes and no!. Yes, he did have a general outline and what would happen in each trilogy set down but nothing was written in stone!. No because that general outline that he had was NOT what we ended up seeing on the big screen!. You can trace it right back to the event that changed the story and sent it in a different direction !.!.!. Lucas changed things so that Anakin and Vader were the same person !.!.!. yep, in the first outlines of the story they were two different people!. The other thing that can be seen as changing the way the story went was when Lucas decided to make Leia the "other Skywalker"!. The duel between Luke and Vader in ep VI was the main reason why this change was made!. Lucas was stumped on how to get Luke to attack his father in a dark side fueled rage, he did this by making Leia the "other Skywalker" and having Vader threaten her!. This change had 3 major effects on the saga, first, everybody went EEWWWWW !.!.!. he kissed his sister !.!.!. on the lips !.!.!. lol !.!.!. second, it eliminated the third trilogy !.!.!. third it brought Harrison Ford back on board for the last movie!. Ford thought that ending up frozen in a block of carbonite was the perfect way for Solo to die but when Lucas told him about the change and that the character would live on Ford changed his mind and came back for ep VI!.

When Lucas decided to make the prequels he had a couple very huge things standing in his way!. First, how was he ever going to make 3 more movies as good or better than the OT !.!.!. it couldn't be done!. Second, much of the back story that he had laid out years ago was now junk because of the events of the OT so he had to go back in and write new scripts for them!.

Sorry for the long winded rant !.!.!. I tend to ramble a little after 3:00AM !.!.!. lol !.!.!.

George Lucas originally wrote a movie storyline that was intended to be just one movie!. Once he began writing the screenplay for the movie, it got to be too long, so he decided to break it into multiple films (3, representing the original 3 Star Wars movies)!. He completed the screenplay for just the first, and completed the film!. However, in the meantime he had to develop a story line to explain the history of the characters in the movie!. It wasn't really his intent to make movies out of the backstory, but it provided a history of the fictional worlds that he had created to explain how the circumstances in the story came to be!. After completing the first three films, the public outcry for more Star Wars prompted Lucas to consider converting his backstory into more films!. After a lengthy period, he did exactly that and produced the three prequel films!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It originally was going to be just one movie, or maybe a trilogy, but when the first was such a huge success, he conceived a nine-movie epic!. After the three original films, he planned to do the three prequel episodes, then three more showing what happened after "Return of the Jedi"!. The first movie originally didn't have an episode number, but "The Empire Strikes Back" was released as Episode V after he decided to make the prequels later!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The original story started at 4 and ended at 6 but it was too long, so George took the first act and made ep 4 but he had the whole back story and act 2 and 3 (ep 5 and 6) that he still wanted to make, so he took less pay so he could keep the rights to make the sequals!. The story for ep 1,2 and 3 was only a vague idea in 1977!Www@Enter-QA@Com

When Lucas released the first movie back in 1977, he fashioned it after the Saturday matinee serials of the 40s and 50s, like Flash Gordon, Singing Sandy, and Roy Rodgers!.

These serials would all start off with an intro which contained a updating, as in "Episode XXVII: When we last saw our hero, Sandy was knocked out and trussed up in the spill-way of Tinker's Dam!.!.!.", often done in the rolling-style of Star Wars' intros!. That's why Lucas started with Episode IV; he wanted the look and feel of an old serial that was being joined in progress!Www@Enter-QA@Com

He didn't call it "Episode IV"at first, but just Star Wars!. After it became a huge success, Lucas developed bigger plans for the story - nine movies instead of just one!. At that point he realized he'd started the story in the middle, so he re-titled the movie as "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope!."Www@Enter-QA@Com

After he had the story all sketched out, he realized it was too much for one movie!. So, he broke it down, and it ended up to be 9 movies!. Back in those days you could not be sure all the movies would get made!. If the first one failed the rest would not get made!. He then decided that the middle part made for the most exciting story!. He was able to get the first movie made!. The rest is history!. The final trilogy will probably never be made!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

Like the above answers say there was supposed to be just one STAR WARS movie!. But it was successful so it lead to five new movies and then in the new millennium George Lucas decided to edit the older three films!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
