It's the best 'chasing your tail' movie, ever!. "What was Rosebud!? Who was Rosebud!? Can we interview Rosebud!?"
Why!? Cane was a rich guy that died!. That's all, nothing else!. It was his decision to not keep a diary and include Rosebud in it!. The media was lured into it this yarn for no reason!.
And "so what" if they found a "Rosebud" and interviewed him/her!? The next question would have been "What was Cane like!?" or "What did you get out of knowing him!?" or "What secrets can we publish about Cane!?" Interviewing the mysterious Rosebud would not have offered anything other than someone's reaction to a rich guy dying!.
I'm glad I watched it but only for the peer pressure of finding out what / who Rosebud was and how insidious the media can be when a person of wealth dies!. That and Orson Wells rules!.

Technically it's briliant, and Welles was quite clearly well ahead of his time!.
