Are there any 'classic' films or books everyone raves over, that you did!

Question: Are there any 'classic' films or books everyone raves over, that you didn't think much of!?
I am currently getting towards the end of The Shining!.!.!.!. I loved the film, and while the book plugs many of the gaps (not least the weird scene near the end with the man in the dog suit), I think they labour the point a bit much about the family's previous life!.!.!.!. and the book is becoming a task to finish!.

What about you!?

Loads!.

Anything by Jane "bloody" Austen and Charlotte Bronte!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

LOL -

A lot of Stephen King is like that - really draws you in at the beginning and then is a bit of a chore to finish!.

LoTR is okay, so long as you skip all the tedious battles and songs!.

The book with the bloke with the madeleine was the most boring thing I've ever read!. It took me months to read it!. The only good thing was that it really helped me sleep!. That's why it took such a long time, I'd read a page or two and fall asleep through sheer boredom!.

Don't really know why I spent such a long time on it, I normally don't bother finishing books I'm not enjoying!. A friend raved about 'Midnight's Children' because she knew I was into Magic Realism, but that's not Magic Realism; it's just stupid!. So I didn't read much of it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Film- Love Actually!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.worraloadacrap!. The writing makes me cringe!. Not strictly a 'classic' but hugely popular!.

Book-sorry!.!.!.!.!.Harry Potter!. Just a mishmash of every book I ever read as a kid!. The writing isn't great either and it's a terrible book to read aloud!. It makes you stutter!.

I love lotr films but I cannot read the books!. Anything with maps and family trees at the front is usually a bad sign!.

Bring on the td's !.!.!.lol :-)Www@Enter-QA@Com

Dune actually!.!.!.It's well written and a good story but I found it hard going!. The David Lynch movie though very nice to look at didn't really do the story justice or make it any easier for me to get into

Gormanghast books- again, well written- but holy hell it can be a chore to read!.!.If anybody ever successfully adapts that one I'll take my hat off to them

Anything where history is thrown out of the window at the expense of making money!. Either make it pure fiction or make it at least vaguely based on the facts!.

Titanic- not historically accurate and too shamaltzy for me!. Everybody in has given a better performance more worthy of credit (Leo in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Kate in Sense and Sensibility)

Likewise Braveheart- entertaining, maybe- oscar worthy no!.

and 300!.!.!.!.oh dear god!.!.!.my eyes hurt and I could feel myself getting more stupid as I watched it!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

Lord Of The Rings!.

Both the books and the films are long-winded, meandering, not as atmospheric or engrossing as people seem to think, and ultimately a bit pointless!. The same story could've been told in one-third of the time without losing anything!. Tedious!.

Saturday Night Fever

It's so famous I thought it must be a good movie, and I love dancing, so I finally watched it!. What a load of trash!! Just trash from beginning to end, with the exception of great music and a couple good dance scenes!.!.!. I felt like I needed to take a shower in bleach after watching it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Definitely The Thin Red Line!. John Travolta's short appearance was laughable, and the rest of the movie seemed so irrelevant!. I've never not been attached to characters like this before!. I couldn't even tell you the point of the movie!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Its a Wonderful Life!. Everyone goes on about it and it did nothing for me!. I don't think I felt even slightly moved!.

As for Stephen King!.!.!.!.!.!.!.I love his work!. Stick with him, some are better than others!. He does tend to make a short story long though!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Despite being a sci-fi fan, 'star wars' (all of them) bore me to tears!. I cannot get into the plot or characters!.

'The Lord of the rings'
one of the few films that *literally* sent me to sleep

The Godfather - so shoot me, I've never been a fan of mob-glorifying movies!.
Scarface!. Bored!. Beyond!. Belief!.

there are many others but those are the two that spring to mind!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Books & movies: Harry Potter (all of them)
Movie: The Lord of the Rings I, II & III
Movie: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Movie: Notting HillWww@Enter-QA@Com

I thought "Jaws" was pretty overrated!. I was a bit bored while watching it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

20,000 Leagues under the Sea - it's the only book I've ever given up on!. It was more like reading an essay on the flora and fauna of the deep sea!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I only saw the first Lord of the Rings, and thought it was so boring, wouldn't even try and watch the next two instalmentsWww@Enter-QA@Com

I thought the book was a million times better than the film!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

'Citizen Kane' and anything from the pen of Thomas Hardy!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

eternal sunshine of the spotless mind

found it so boring!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

"The Fountain" - It's a load of pretentious crap!Www@Enter-QA@Com

catcher in the rye!.!.!.

Drove me insane with with repetitivness!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

I loved the book The Bonfire of the Vanities!. I regard it to be a modern day American classic!.

However, the film version was absolute rubbish!. It was so far from how I perceived that story I wanted to cry!.

I have never read Lord of the Rings!. Fantasy fiction has no appeal for me!.

The Godfather I liked,

Victorian literature I enjoy when I have patience to read all the wordy stuff, but I love the feel of reading something that is authentically Victorian, written exactly in that period!.

Nice Question!. Have a star!. ☆

EDIT!.

A recent film I disliked intensely (well recent for me) was the Jennifer Aniston one, Breaking Up!. Complete tosh!.

EDIT 2
I adored The Shining!. Yes Yes Yes!.
But some of Stephen King books, although very good, make me wonder what he's on!!!!!Www@Enter-QA@Com
