However I think it's a great question so I offer my OPINION!.
The Dark Knight was a great movie!. It had great direction and great acting, there were only a few ridiculous plot points and/or visual effects!. It tells the story of a character loved by millions of people that is almost 70 years old!.
The movie, however, will not win an Oscar!. At least not in the best picture category!. I WOULD give an Oscar to late actor Heath Ledger for his creepy, chaos, anarchy driven portrayal of the Joker!. Batman's one true, formidable nemesis!.
I know that people will say that it's a sympathy nomination (and possible win) but it's not!. Watch it next to any other best actor/best supporting actor performance such as Sir Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, or Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood!. The effort put forth in his performance (In My Opinion) is perfect!. The subtle nuances, the fantastic twitches and peculiar licking of his lips, it's all perfect!.

Personally it was my favorite movie of the year, besides Pineapple Express, and it has all the arguments going for it, great performances, good story line, fantastic direction, the amount of money it made, critical acclaim, and the way the general public with bat **** crazy over it!.
