Yes, I think so!. Ada (Holly Hunter) is able to "speak" via her beloved piano!. It is her voice!. Yet, she is unable to utter a word to her daughter, husband, and lover!. I, therefore, think that an inanimate object--in this case, the piano--can be a source of resentment!. The daughter, Flora, resented it the least because she saw how the piano also gave her mother pleasure!. Even Flora, herself, enjoyed listening and dancing to the sweet music!. The lover (Harvey Keitel) retrieved the piano from the beach for Ada because he realized Ada's strong need for the piano but would have preferred verbal conversation with him, I'm sure!. But it was the husband (Sam Neill) who resented the piano the most!. He didn't understand Ada's need for the piano!. Then, when he discovered that the piano playing facilitated Ada's love affair, he chopped off Ada's index finger with his axe, and threatened to take them all off, one by one, if she continued to see her lover Baines!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
