Shawshank Redemption does not just drag you through horror (and you're right, The Shining is a masterpiece) but what separates the 2 is Shawshank's moving story!. It brings together friendship, the dream and fear of freedom, sadness that really moves you!.

A man wrongly accused, after dispair and disbelief puts that aside and through hardships and hard work lives with what has become his "fate" or has he!? He plots and quietly uses his mind to free himself and seek retribution against a dishonest prison staff all the while forming friendships!. The bond he develops with Morgan Freeman's character is nothing less than moving!.

The story also moves along, keeps you interested and longing for a great conclusion!. (I didn't read the book beforehand)!. It delivers in spades!. This movie easily ranks #1 with me!.

Through courage, strength, friendship, hardship and ultimately redemption this film has every element you want in a movie!. It's unreal how well done this movie is!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think that Shawshank was a really great example of Stephen King's less-than-horror writing!. He is a master of colloquialism, and Shawshank (the movie) embraced it wholeheartedly!.

And yes, I do think that some of his horror books are silly!. It's hard to make a movie scary, when the scariest stuff in the book is what is going on INSIDE the character's heads!. You just can't do it right when all you have is a movie screen!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

No, I don't think that his horror stories are ridiculous - they just weren't successfully adapted to film!. I loved the book 'The Shining' but found the film really disappointing because of the changes in character and plot that Kubrick made!. Shawshank was a much better adaptation of his work because it really followed the spirit of the short story - the same could be said of the film 'Stand By Me'!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

i think the shining and shawshank are equally good!. in the end, shawshank is popular cos its so epic and heartfelt, and it creates such a miserable world that the joy the characters experience is so much more powerful for it!. the shining is a much harsher film and so less popular, cos in many ways shawshank is an uplifting film, whereas the shining is incredibly dark and depressing!. thats why i like it but a lot of people cant handle it and prefer their movies more emotional and cheerier!. but i reckon the shining is pretty much the best horror movie ever madeWww@Enter-QA@Com

Because it doesn't involve supernatural happenings!. It could very possibly be a true story just as Misery could!. I don't think The Shinning even compares!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think its just a matter of who the film ends up being made by, and can't forget about IT I wouldn't say it was the best but it was still pretty messed up!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I thought Cujo was the best!. That dog is cute!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
