At a battlefield, he happens to get stuck in the middle of the road of the battle scene!. In order to avoid getting shot by either of sides, stitches & marches with a flag that has Union flag on one side and Confederate flag on the order
The Union army salutes their side of the flag and so do the Confederates, but as the wind changes, they come to know of the truth and they start firing at the hero!.
The hero changes uniform and joins the confederates to spy on them, falls in love with the daughter of the General!. Thereafter they are many hilarious scenes, where he is almost at the verge of being recognized as an Union Spy, but luck helps him and he becomes a hero!.

Thereafter about a couple of scenes later, he helps her to flee from some brawl!. She thinks he is perfect for her!. They go on a rooftop and kiss!. I haven't found a definitive answer for this, only that Red Skelton did the same gag in "A Southern Yankee", which is a remake of "The General"!.
