Can you suggest me some interesting music?!

Question:

Can you suggest me some interesting music?

I'm looking for songs and singers that I don't know.
I'm not intersted in commercial music (like the music that is broadcasted in several radio stations and in tv channels i.e. MTV).
I don't care of the genere, I care about the good quality of the music.
If you could help me finding interesting and present-day music, it will be very appreciated.
Thanks.

Answers: I've been bombarded with new music for the last few months through festivals, the music library and downloading. I've listened to all sorts of genres and the ones that made a lasting impression on me were:

The Fall (normally characterised as "post punk", don't sound like anyone else I've heard, great beat based music with angry intelligent rants of disgruntled English lead man Mark E Smith)

Cat Power (I've been listening to them/her for ages and you should check out two albums Moon Pix and What Would The Community Think)

The Dubliners (Irish legendary folk band - only listen to their stuff with lead singer Luke Kelly. His voice is incredible. Best example is Rocky Road To Dublin and The Auld Triangle)
Check out The Pogues album Rum, Sodomy and the Lash (great title, comes from a Winston Churchill quote) for some celtic punk!

Billy Bragg (English singer/guitarist). I like him for the honest, clever lyrics, great great guitar playing. I don't know anything about his studio albums, just heard his greatest hits Shall I Paint You A Picture.

Hip Hop/Rap stuff -
Notorious B.I.G's debut Ready To Die is the best lyricism I've ever heard. Crude, clever, violent and all those good things.

Saw M.I.A at a festival and she was the highlight of the 3 days. Check out her album Arula. It's bollywood style rap without the cheesyness.

Old favourites of mine are Tom Waits and PJ Harvey. Can't fault these people. Adam Green, Ben Harper, Xavier Rudd, ALO, Michael Franti, John Butler Trio, Keller Williams - try those, hope you like them :) *Scout Niblett (Her album kidnapped by neptune is great)

*Michael Andrews (done the Donnie Darko score and the music makes me feel very inspired)

*Fiona Apple (When the pawn is a great album)

*Amy Winehouse's first album- her music has changed and her debut album is brilliant-her jazz roots come through a lot more on this album that on her new album

*Frank Zappa-hes a legend...very original

There are many great artists out there that aren't part of the mainstream, you have to dig a little deeper thats all, they are the real musicians, the ones that are in the industry because they have a passion for it and not because they want the fame, money and perks that come with it.

Good luck xxx Chevelle, 30 Seconds to Mars, Toy Dolls, Skinny Puppy....

Just depends on your definition of "interesting" Khachaturian's Piano Concerto
Widor's Toccata and Fugue.
Both are better than any of today's pop rubbish and far more enjoyable to listen to - and NO, I'm NOT a classical 'freak' - I'm a session musician, so I do have a slight idea of what I'm on about ! ! ! try listening to some mashups (accapella of one song instramental of another) There is a great compilation album called "Strange buandBeautiful" featuring artists like Aqualung, David Grey amongst others. It is an eclectic mixture but is one of my favourites. i love buddhist songs..
