Question:
Where is the best place to sit, acustically, in a Shoebox style concert hall (like the Dallas Symphony)?
I'm headed to see the Beethoven festival in Dallas with a classical music afficianado. While I am unable to here the difference in tones my friend can, and I want her to have the best experience possible. Thank you.
Answers: If there is a balcony, sit in the front center section of the balcony. This will give you direct line of sight to all instruments, which means there is nothing to block/disrupt the sound traveling from the instrument to your ears. Highs should be crisper, less muffled.
In the main floor, sit in the center section about 3/4 of the way to the back of the room. If there is a balcony, try to sit about 3 or 4 rows in front of the balcony, as the front of the balcony will act as a reflective surface and will throw some of the sound that normally travels over your head back at you.
At least that's been my experience in "shoebox" style concert halls. I have been known to sit acoustically on occasion, but I generally receive icy stares form the other concert-goers when I do.
But seriously, folks.....
I find that if you sit slightly to the right of center in most halls o you can hear the basses an cellos more directly. That is MY favorite spot. Your friend may feel differently. I've never been to the Dallas hall, but I am constantly in fear of missing the woodwinds because of the acoustics of our hall. Dont know how to advise you there.
Enjoy!!!
