It was fun in the beginning, like making fun music with your best friends, and not caring who listened. But after the death of their founding guitarist, the songs got too pop and mainstream by the 90's... It seemed like they were doing it for the money, not the fun.
Contrast the 70's "Planet Claire" and "Rock Lobster" with the 90's "Channel Z" or "Roam"

My advice to you: A cold six pack, a warm patio, and a stereo blasting Wild Planet and Cosmic Thing back to back.
The B-52s' songs have a very catchy, fun, and upbeat sound to them.....if you weren't listening to them when they came out, I would assume it would be really hard to appreciate them....they are by no means in a class such as The Beatles and so forth, but they were very unique in their sound, and I love bands like that...R.I.P. Fred, miss ya!
It's just fun...it's meant to be fun and goofy, and it is. That's all.
