Swing music actually developed in the 1920s but wasn't identified as a true jazz style until 1935 in the united states because the style originated in New Orleans in 1920. Swing is mostly known for their rhythm section and fast 4-4 tempo, a tempo that not many people used before then. When it became a world sensation was in 1935 and people started to develop large bands around the country. Unfortunately, when WW2 started, the big bands began to dissipate because the musicians were being drafted and shipped off to war, having them let go of gigs and even their love for their instruments. Even after the war, however, the people who were providing the bands and their pays couldn't keep up with the demand and the bands lost many gigs, and had to find a regular nine to five jobs when the factories were up and running at full speed. However, with the loss of swing, there was also the gain of jump blues and beebop in 1948. Hope this answers your question!

There were still a lot of swing bands working in the late fifties. I heard Harry James in person at the Palladium in L.A. in 1958.

Swing also known as Big Band became popular starting in the late 30s and continued in to the 40s and 50s. Some of today's artists like Harry Connick Jr are trying to make it popular again.

Some of the popular artists from the 30s and 40s was Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman.
