There's no way I can believe artists get discovered. I believe this is all manufactured. And, it's not just that it all LOOKS so manufactured, either. The late Gene King, the owner of King's Record Shop (and brother of Pee Wee King), told me that the Columbia Records people came to him to get the legal paperwork signed for the image of his shop to be on Rosanne Cash's album cover. While there, the Columbia people told him how many albums the record would sell, which songs would be released, and ASSURED him they would all go to #1. Mind you, this is three months before "King's Record Shop" was even released.

(PS -- King's Record Shop was torn down after Gene King died.)

My opinion is that they don't get what we used to see as discovered but they are groomed to look and sound and act a certain way. The veterans of the real country music just got out there and let er rip and gave us something that we can and did and do remember.

when they had the grand ole opry in the country music area of real country music you were dicovered for your talent. The agent who discovered you might have been a famous country singer who just happened to listen to your song on the country music radio station. Now though it is so spread out across the country and such a huge business If you have a demo all you need is an agent to get you noticed. Music is different and the whole business has changed also. I saw Johnny Cash in person on stage and I saw Skeeter Davis sing her most favorite why do the birds keep on singing in person. Songs in that area like Gonna find me a bluebird or from a jack to a King, or on the wings of a snow white dove. They have changed it to a more citified or slick smarty kind of music that appeals to the city country fans. I liked it when if they were on the grand ol opry show they were ledgit country music performers and you had to earn your way on stage.

Well, there certainly wasn't any American Idol! No, I believe there's a formula for becoming a country singer now, with good looks taking precedence.

Some artists are discovered still... Just that the artist doesn't hit it off like what the wishes are of yesteryear like say Dolly Parton.

Some of the artists are discovered only after they've sold a number of albums on some independant label in their home area with the band beating feet to promote themselves every day until some Nashville scout finds the numbers they are selling and wants to sign them....

Such as the 1990s John Berry who sold many cds in his native Alabama before having hit country...

same thing for Jason Aldean, Craig Morgan, and a few others making the rounds today as most were session musicians who tried to make a break as a lot of the signers like Willie Nelson and such were in the 1960s and 1970s

With things like Idol and Nashville star, people aint discovered the way they used to be. A few but not many.

Once in a blue moon a new talent may get discovered as in the "classic" days but most of todays artist are "Glamor"shots singers and their songs are made for their style and voice.
