Question: When Jimi Hendrix appeared on Johnny Carson and was asked "who is the greatest guitarist in the world?",..who was Jimi's answer?There are many different versions of this story...just curious if any one knows it or is even familiar with this other guitarist.

Yes, I've heard that he cited Gibbons as his favourite guitarist (and therefore best), but I've also heard that he said Phil Keaggy. I know Clapton has claimed Keaggy as one of the greatest as well. I think Eddie VH may have also.
However, Keaggy was barely breaking out when Hendrix was still alive, so I'm not too sure about that.
I'm not sure if this is when he said it, but he was reputed to have cited Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top as his "favorite" guitarist. I'm not sure if he ever referred to him as the best.
Billy Gibbons was Hendrix's favorite. From what I read he was Not asked who the greatest guitarist in the world was.

I heard a story where Jimi said Terry Kath from Chicago was his favorite guitarist.

A long-time Chicago fan has reported that at one Hendrix concert, Jimi made a reference to Kath out of the blue, saying something to the effect, "You gotta check out this guy Terry Kath. His band is CTA. He's the best guitar player in the universe."
