Here we go again. First do not let anyone tell you what kind of guitar to get. Guitars are very personal and most people will tell you to get what they like. Always ALWAYS go to a shop and play as many different guitars as you can. If you don't know much about guitars ask someone that works there what differences there are. Make sure that you are comfortable with the guitar that you choose, both standing with a strap and sitting supporting the guitar. If you like the way it looks but it is too heavy, then you will not enjoy playing it. MAKE sure that the strings do not sit too high, that will make it hard to press them down and also may discourage you from playing. DO YOUR BEST to find a used guitar shop with a good reputation. If you buy used you can get a guitar for $300-400 that you would pay $700+ for new.

Whatever you do enjoy playing. It's a great thing to sit and create music. Good luck. If you need help with your playing check out this on-line community: http://www.weplayguitar.com/user.php?op=...

the guitat cobain played was a custom cross between a fender mustang and fender jazzmaster guitars...i would recommend epiphone starter kits...or any starter kit for that matter, but from what ive seen, the epi sg and les pauls are pretty popular with alt rock music. i have the SG, but i use it more for plain ole rock. go to a local guitar store and see which axes you like best

fender stratocaster!!

not very original, but i like it.

Can't go wrong with a Fender Stratocaster or Telecaster. A kid a knew had an ibanez, it seemed to be fine.

I do love gibson les paul's the best. Ephiphone owns Gibson so I suppose that they would be similar in quality.

My dream guitar is a Gibson Les Paul that was designed in honor of the corvette. Last time i seen one on Ebay it was over 5 grand.

I know I've seen Mark Tremontti (former guitarist for Creed and now with Alter Bridge) with a Les Paul.

I would have to say that Fender and Gibson lead the way with electric guitars.

When I started out, I went to the pawn shop and looked into the different types. Found the one that suited me, payed a helluva lot less for it there, started a good line of communication with the cats at the shop so I bring in my guitars every 10 months or so, and swap out. They know I take care of all the axes, and they really give me a good deal on the next one. It has worked for me for going on twenty years now. You should look into it.

If you're going electric, get one with at least 2 pickups. Some of the entry level guitars have only 1 pickup and you'll want some variety of sound as you play.

I agree with the previous post and put your hands on what you might buy beforehand. Guitars are like a women . You won't know you like them till you talk to them.
