The Fender Squire series Stratocaster or Telecaster can be a nice guitar for the money. Be sure to bring an experienced player with you to pick out a good one. Some are adjusted much better than others. Gibson Epiphone makes some decent beginner guitars too.

yes, a fender strat is a good one.
epiphones are a tad expensive, just start with a fender. Plus you can get them in packs for a good price.
