Why is this less common?!

Question: In the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, there were a lot of female bands making their own rock music, playing it, and rocking out. chicks like Heart, Courtney Love, Shirley Manson, Brodie Dalle (from the distillers), the gogos, janis joplin, grace slick and many more females i may not have mentioned.

How come it is less common to see a female band making their own music and playing their own instruments? How come more female artists are selling out and turning into popstars, or making music that totally contradicts who they originally were?

How come you never see female rock bands as much anymore?

Good question - I love female artists, especially rock bands led by females, so I am disappointed by this trend too.

I hate to say this, but I think the popularity of MTV and the internet have set the bar for female artists - not only do they have to play well but they have to look hot, too. It's sad to say it, but there's not room for talented women artists if they're not drop dead gorgeous. So what you end up with is a bunch of hot female artists who are not talented, and the ladies who rock but don't sell well on TV are left out in the cold.

I'm glad to see bands like The Gossip out there doing their thing rocking out even though their lead singer does not fit the traditional mold of a knock-out lead female singer. I support them by buying their records and and hope that others will too.

Blame it on the industry..the bands are doing what they have to do to get the record deals.

It is because everybody is just trying to do whatever it takes to make a quick buck.

brittney spears killed all hopes

Sex sells...bottom line.
Joan Jet was an origional, Courtney Love was awseome with Hole. record companies wont invest in them. The entire music industry is made up of $ now it has nothing to do with talent. Its whatever will make a buck.
I am sure there a few good bands out there in the underground scene

sO fAR jUST pARAMORE.
shEZ nOT tHAT gOOD eITHER.
nOT lIKE jOAN jETT!!!!!
shEZ aWESOME

It has nothing to do with talent anymore, it is all about whos a-s-s can sell the most overproduced music to the masses. Sure, maybe a few of the ladies on the scene have a sniff of talent but it is all about the a-s-s nowdays!!!! Blame the industry, blame MTV, blame the radio stations. Doesnt seem to matter which style of music, the ladies are whored out...

One you didn't mention was Stevie Nicks, who fronted 3 bands {Fritz, Buckingham Nicks, Fleetwood Mac} before embarking on a great solo career.
And as I'm mentioning Stevie, I must add Christine McVie.

The only woman out there in Rock right now who compares to any of them, is Candice Night {of Blackmore's Night}.
She writes the lyrics, sings the songs, and plays several instruments.
