Original artist was Skeets McDonald. Or, should I say, the first hit version. Slim Willet, who wrote the song, also recorded it the same year McDonald's version came out.

Slim Willet now there is a name you don't hear too often. He also had out "Tool Pusher From Snyder" and "Hadacol Corner". He was a pretty decent singer though but died as the result of a heart attack at a fairly young age in the 1960's. But he did write the song " Don't Let The Stars get In Your Eyes" good answer isawmarty.
