As of current day:
Herman Li, DragonForce Guitarist.
Is...so you mean living.
Jimmy Page or Tom Morello.
And someone below me said Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of the Mars Volta, and I could not agree more. He's REALLY good.
Coming from a guitarist, I've always felt Hendrix is the most overrated guitarist in the history of guitar. Either him or Kurt Cobain, because Kurt Cobain is ridiculously overrated too. I guess it helps to die young doesn't it?
Jimmy Page was great, Slash is fun to listen to (although not unbelievably musically or technically inclined), Kirk Hammett has some great work, Eric Clapton is an amazing guitarist (if you consider him rock).
Technically I love guys like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, etc. Satriani is a bit too much of a show-off in my opinion, lol.
kevin jonas!
Everyone who doesn't know Hendrix, says Hendrix. He played the blues. Stevie Ray out did him more recently. If you want rock guitarists who made a mark in this world that will stand the test of time, don't look for the guys who do solo albums to show off how fast their fingers are. Look at guys like Keith Richards. Solid guitarist who wrote and sings most of his stuff. How about David Gilmour? Amazing work that will last forever. Robert Fripp. Guitar inovator. The list changes daily.
I like Johnny Marr (Smiths) & his "wall of jangle". I also like Jimmy Page (Led Zep), Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (Mars Volta), and Mark Morton (Lamb Of God).
I'm not gonna say any of the G3 people like Satch, Vai, or Eric Johnson, cause they're all complete tools and they dress like drag queens on acid. They soooo need to get over themselves. Constant arpeggio shredding and sweep picking isn't really great guitar in terms of musical composition, it's a gimmick....and I can only listen to it for about 20 seconds before I get annoyed. I'd rather watch an asian kid do the rubix cube in 20 seconds.
Dimebag Darrell had his own sound that nobody can duplicate. Same with Jimi Hendrix. Others can play their music but it just isn't the same. But right now-- living -- Zakk Wylde is amazing!!
Eddie Van Halen!
Ever - Slash, Kirk Hammett, Kerry King/Jeff Hanneman
